Colorado Trails Ranch Hosts Training Academy for Equine Abuse Investigators

That's what Code 3 Associates is for!If there’s one thing we love at Colorado Trails, it’s horses. From old to young, we love them all. That’s why it’s very upsetting for us to think about horses being abused, misused, neglected, or starved.

If you understand how Colorado Trails Dude Ranch staff feels about horses, then you’ll also understand why we host the Equine Investigations Academy twice a year. We’ve been doing this since 1984, first with the American Humane Association and now with Code 3 Associates.

Who is Code 3 Associates?

Code 3 Associates is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that specializes in providing support for animals in disaster situations. A “disaster situation” might mean a beloved pet trapped in the aftermath of a tornado, but it might also mean an abused or neglected animal who needs to be rescued by law enforcement.

Code 3′s services to the community include training law enforcement officers to recognize and help animals that are being abused or neglected. It is in this arena where the Equine Investigations Academy and Colorado Trails Dude Ranch have partnered.

Equine Investigator’s Academy

Half classroom-based and half hands-on horse training, the Equine Investigations Academy teaches law enforcement officers how investigate cases of trauma or neglect in horses. Colorado Trails is perfect for this Academy because we have such a wide range of horses. We have old horses and young horses, big horses and small horses. Our horses can teach the students what a “normal” horse should look like, so that they can easily recognize when something is abnormal.

Our dude ranch provides the lodging, meals, classroom, and horses, while Code 3 provides the instruction. Since the instructors have seen our herd twice per year for a very long time, they know the horses quite well. The Code 3 course held each year at Colorado Trails is also accredited by Colorado State University.

We think that if our horses could talk, they would also say that they are proud to be part of such important work!
