In Europe, it has been a long standing tradition for those who love to draw and paint to take a holiday to a wonderfully scenic place. While we call these respites from our normal busy lives a vacation here in the States, the purpose and benefit are the same. At Colorado Trails, we host a special guest ranch vacation week for artists, every September. While anyone is welcome to book their fall horseback riding vacation or fly fishing vacation the week of September 19-26, we have a unique experience awaiting our creative guests.
The surrounding scenery here in Durango and the San Juan Mountains is breathtaking. When fall colors begin to kiss the trees, the natural landscape around our guest ranch takes on fabulous new dimensions. It makes the perfect restful spot to concentrate on capturing the grandeur of hues with your pencil and brush. To celebrate this special time of the year, we hold classes featuring the experienced and talented art clinician, Pat Fullerton.
While a Durango guest ranch might not come to mind as the perfect destination for improving your artistic skills and talent, we assure you it’s wonderful. The serenity of the location beneath that clear blue Colorado sky is a balm to the senses. The colors of autumn here at Colorado Trails create a beautiful palette of rich green pines and deep red oaks, brightened by the gold leaves of the aspen. The combination is truly inspiring to anyone with artistic talents.
While attending Artist’s Week at guest ranch, Colorado Trails, your days will be divided between the opportunity to spend mornings at your leisure horseback riding, hiking, fishing or any of the other available early day activities. Afternoons, your hours will be filled with drawing and painting classes. Each day on this unique guest ranch art retreat, Pat will be covering something new. Some of the sessions are held indoors and others you’ll be enjoying landscape painting in the middle of the magnificent scenery. At the end of the week is our traditional art show, with everyone’s work on display.
Some of her past season teaching sessions held here at guest ranch, Colorado Trails, have focused on learning things like perspective and drawing from the right side of the brain. Pat is wonderful at teaching the art of watercolor. She starts out with an introduction class to cover different application techniques, which is the perfect exercise for you to prepare for using them in your mountain scenery paintings that are guaranteed to follow.
This artist’s retreat week is filled with activity, much like our regular horseback riding – fly fishing vacation sessions that so many families enjoy throughout the summer. Most children are back to school in late September, so this is an adult-only week on the guest ranch. You won’t have to worry about dragging your art supplies around the airport. Everything needed for the clinic sessions with Pat is supplied by Colorado Trails as part of your dude ranch vacation.
There are some amazing spots that we will take you too during our outdoor art sessions. We’ve done this artist’s week repeatedly and have found some truly favorite locations that bring out the creative side in anyone. All you need to do is call us to make your reservation and pack your clothes. Everything else will be ready and waiting for you when you arrive at our Colorado dude ranch. We’re sure you’ll be delighted to know that your rates will be at a 20% discount for this once a year event at Colorado Trails.
